Hello hello! As many of you know, every two weeks I send out a Good Book/Good Bread newsletter that contains a book review and a bread I baked to fit with an aspect of the story.
Today I’m launching my once monthly “Shorts” edition of the newsletter, which will go out in between regular newsletters. Shorts will feature a little description and photo of a delicious bread someone else baked (i.e. something I ate at a bakery or restaurant, or a friend’s place) plus a link to an excellent online piece I enjoyed—either something new or an older article that had an impact on me. Think of it as a crumb-sized version of the Good Book/Good Bread newsletter. Enjoy!
Good Bread Someone Else Made
This giant piece of focaccia comes from Dose, an excellent coffee shop in downtown Revelstoke. Dose is located directly below the co-working space I go to most days, which is both a godsend and very dangerous. This focaccia had caramelized onions, sesame seeds, rosemary and asiago cheese. It was springy with a crackly crust.
Good Short Read
Swim. Bike. Cheat? by Sarah Lyall, The New York Times, 2016 here
This is a feature about a Canadian ultra endurance athlete found to have cheated in multiple races. It’s been eight years since I first read it, and I still think about it a lot. In my mind, the payoff from completing adventures and pursuits in the outdoor is a sense of accomplishment, so the idea of cutting corners is so interesting to me from a psychological perspective.
I also spent three years living in the town this story takes place in, Squamish, British Columbia. It is an extremelyyyyyy outdoorsy place. The town’s slogan is Hardwired for Adventure, and every second person you meet seems to be training for a ridiculous race or expedition. I can think of no worse place to piss off your fellow outdoor athletes by cheating.
